Over 200 students of the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Yola, have benefitted from a skills acquisition and leadership training programme organized by the school’s alumni association.
The initiative, which targeted SS2 and SS3 students, featured practical training in soap making, perfume production, and shoemaking, among other life skills. The programme aimed to prepare the students for life beyond secondary school by equipping them with practical knowledge and entrepreneurial abilities.
As part of the programme, the alumni also distributed organic sanitary pads to all participating students, adding a thoughtful gesture to their empowerment drive.
Speaking at the event, Global President of the FGGC Yola Alumni Association, Jumai Wange Kwabe, commended the school’s principal for maintaining discipline and academic focus among the students. She emphasized the importance of skills acquisition, especially for young girls preparing to face the larger world.
“Skills are essential, and as you prepare to leave school, I encourage you to learn something tangible today that could help you tomorrow,” Kwabe told the students.
In her response, the school’s principal, Mrs. Bassey Ibah Ekanan, expressed deep appreciation to the alumni for giving back to their alma mater. She praised the initiative, noting that such efforts complement academic learning and foster self-reliance among students.
Mrs. Ekanan also lauded the commitment of teachers, describing them as “second parents” whose sacrifices continue to shape future generations. She urged students to remain obedient, focused, and to take the training seriously.
Some of the students expressed excitement over the training, describing it as a rare opportunity. They also thanked the alumni for the sanitary pads, which many said were new to them and a welcome gift.
