Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (CON) has received the Outstanding Sports Development Award from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in recognition of his administration’s significant contributions to the growth of sports in Adamawa State.
The award was presented to the Governor at the Government House, Yola, by Mr. Austin Ajayi, SWAN’s National Welfare Secretary, during a brief ceremony held as part of the association’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
In his remarks, Governor Fintiri expressed gratitude to SWAN for the honour, describing the recognition as both inspiring and motivating.
“This award is a testament to our government’s commitment to developing sports in Adamawa State. We see sports as a tool for youth empowerment, national unity, and social cohesion,” he said.
The Governor also highlighted key achievements of his administration in sports infrastructure, including the ongoing construction of a world-class stadium in Yola. He assured that work on the second phase would commence immediately after the first phase is commissioned.
“We are determined to create an enabling environment for sports to thrive. Our focus is to engage the youth positively and unlock their potential through sports,” he added.
The ceremony also recognized other distinguished personalities from Adamawa State, including Engr. Nimrod Musa, Chief Solomon Kumagar, Chief Justin Madugu (OON) — Head Coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons — and Madam Victoria Tadawokai, the first female SWAN Chairman and National Officer.
SWAN’s diamond jubilee event, marking 60 years since its establishment in 1964, celebrated individuals and institutions that have made remarkable impacts on sports development across the country.
Governor Fintiri’s recognition further underscores his administration’s sustained investment in sports as a vital component of youth and community development in Adamawa State.
