Nutrition Society of Nigeria Inaugurates Adamawa Chapter, Advocates for Local Food Production and Balanced Nutrition

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) has officially inaugurated its Adamawa State Chapter in a ceremony marked by calls for improved nutrition, food security, and local agricultural engagement.
The event, which included sensitization lectures on the state’s nutritional indices, was opened by the chairperson of the new chapter, Dr. Rita Nwankwo.
She emphasized NSN’s commitment to combating hunger and malnutrition through collaboration with stakeholders and promoting policies that ensure food and nutritional security across Nigeria.
Chairman of the occasion, Pharm. Wafari Thelman, commended the establishment of the chapter in Adamawa and pledged his support for the society’s initiatives.
He also lauded the state government for providing an enabling environment for the NSN’s operations and encouraged continued partnership to strengthen nutritional health in the region.
In a keynote address delivered on behalf of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kaletapwa Farauta, Mrs. Hauwa Banu from the Deputy Governor’s Office praised the NSN for expanding its reach to Adamawa. She reaffirmed the state government’s willingness to collaborate with the organization in addressing the nutritional needs of its citizens.
She further encouraged residents to return to farming and embrace agriculture, urging them to “produce what they consume” as a path to better nutrition.
Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Bashir Suleiman, who also served as a keynote speaker, highlighted the need to enrich local diets with essential multivitamins. He advocated for a shift towards growing and consuming locally produced food to improve health outcomes.
NSN President, Professor Salisu Maidawa Abubakar, described Adamawa as a critical state for the organization’s mission. He reiterated the society’s dedication to reducing malnutrition and promoting nutritional awareness. He called on the state government and the public to support NSN’s efforts, stressing that proper nutrition is vital for health, development, and longevity.
The inauguration, as noticed by our reporter,marks a significant step in the fight against malnutrition in Adamawa State, aligning with NSN’s broader vision for a healthier Nigeria through sustainable nutrition.
