PWAN Equips Over 50 Journalists on Police Reform,Humanising Police,Solution Journalism

YOLA —By Ojoma Yusuf,Yola The Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, also known as Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN), with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), has enlighten and trained over 50 media practitioners in Adamawa State on ehnacing report on police reform and accountability issues.
The one-day capacity-building workshop, held on Thursday in Yola, was organised under the project titled “Enhancing Public Trust and Gender-Responsive Policing in Nigeria Through the Effective Implementation of the Police Act.”The objective of the traing was to equip journalists with strong knowledge, skills, and tools required for impactful coverage of police accountability, reform initiatives, and gender-sensitive,humanising police
In a welcome address Zainab Waziri PWAN Program Officer,officially welcome all the media practitioners,appreciating them for availing themself for the training as she loudly appluad the NUJ chairman for partnering with them.In response , the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim, commended Partners West Africa Nigeria for organising the workshop. He pointed that the training would enhance journalists’ understanding of police reform reporting and promote professionalism in the discharge of their duties.Abdulahi calls on Journalist privileged to be part of the workshop to learn,upgrade their understanding, support the initiatives Aro Leonardo, a media expect explained that the training focused on the Police Act signed into law in 2020, which seeks to promote an effective and efficient Nigerian Police Force anchored on accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Leonardo also emphasised the importance of solutions journalism and evidence-based reporting, encouraging journalists to rely on facts and figures rather than rumours.He explained that development journalism plays a critical role in reporting social, economic, and political development,Another facilitator, Mrs. Folusho Ogar, spoke on humanising the police and policing, urging journalists to understand and empathise with police officers as human beings who have families and work tirelessly to protect society. She noted that such understanding would promote balanced and responsible reporting.Some of the participant,express their appreciation to the organisers for the capacity-building initiative,pointing that the transformation will be applied professionally in their practice.Highlighr of the capacity building workshop was the presentations of groups, divided into groups and assigned topics related to police reform and accountability.
