Professor Umar disclosed this on Tuesday during a pre-convocation press briefing held at the University Senate Chamber, as part of activities marking the combined ceremony.
According to him, the convocation will take place at the Convocation Square on the main campus and will feature graduands from the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions.
He stated that for the 2023/2024 session, 2,034 first-degree students would be awarded degrees, comprising 55 First Class, 599 Second Class Upper, 1,047 Second Class Lower, 330 Third Class, and three Pass degrees.
For the 2024/2025 academic session, Professor Umar said 3,673 first-degree graduands would be presented, including 61 First Class, 1,199 Second Class Upper, 1,931 Second Class Lower, 479 Third Class, and three Pass degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor explained that the overall total of 7,094 graduands includes 5,707 undergraduate degree recipients, 933 postgraduate degree holders, and 454 recipients of diplomas and certificates.
As part of the programme of events, a pre-convocation lecture will be delivered on Friday, January 30, 2026, by Professor Umaru A. Pate, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State. The lecture, titled “Building Trust Amidst Conflict: Communication, Leadership and the Promise of Peaceful Coexistence in Nigeria,” will hold at Lecture Theatre I, College of Medical Sciences, at 4:00 p.m.
Reflecting on his first year in office, Professor Umar said the University had embarked on wide-ranging reforms aimed at academic excellence, digital innovation, and improved community impact. He revealed that new academic departments, directorates, and units had been established, while curricula were being reviewed to enhance quality and inclusiveness.
He announced that the University admitted its first set of students into Sociology, Political Science, Nursing, and Law programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session, following successful resource verification in December 2024.
He added that the institution was awaiting National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation results for Banking and Finance, Civil Engineering, Building, and Business Education programmes assessed in November 2025.
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that 20 newly verified academic programmes had received full approval for immediate take-off, including courses in Cyber Security, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Mass Communication, Journalism, Broadcasting, Forensic Science, Environmental Management, Meteorology, Petroleum Chemistry, and several postgraduate programmes.
Professor Umar also announced that MAU had entered into international academic partnerships with the Universities of Maroua, Garoua, and Ngaoundere in Cameroon, noting that some Cameroonian students were already enrolled in postgraduate programmes at the university.
On staff welfare, the Vice-Chancellor said the University had cleared all inherited allowances and ensured that no staff member was owed legitimate entitlements. He highlighted initiatives such as interest-free loans, burial support for deceased staff families, and expanded training opportunities, with over 185 staff benefiting from TETFund-sponsored programmes.
He added that several faculty buildings had been renovated, modern equipment procured—particularly for the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies—and utility vehicles refurbished to ease transportation challenges.
Addressing security concerns, Professor Umar acknowledged improvements through internal measures and collaboration with security agencies, while appealing to the Federal Government to support the fencing of the entire campus.
He expressed gratitude to the Federal and Adamawa State Governments, TETFund, the North-East Development Commission, security agencies, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, the media, and other stakeholders for their support.
The Vice-Chancellor urged graduands, parents, and members of the public to attend and support the convocation ceremony.
