Taraba Moves to Strengthen Fire Service with Fresh Recruitment

YOLA —Taraba State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service, has commenced the screening and recruitment of firefighters to strengthen emergency response and mitigate fire outbreaks across the state.

Speaking during the screening exercise in Jalingo, the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the State, Haruna Abubakar, said the exercise followed the implementation of recommendations made by a committee set up by Taraba State Governor to investigate recurring fire incidents in the state.

He explained that the committee recommended the procurement of modern firefighting equipment and the engagement of trained personnel to operate them.

Abubakar said firefighting trucks and equipment have already been procured for the 16 local government areas, including the state headquarters and the airport.

He disclosed that about 320 applicants are taking part in the screening, and successful candidates will proceed to the Federal Fire Service Academy in Lagos for intensive training.

According to the permanent secretary, the current exercise is the first phase of the recruitment, with additional personnel to be engaged as the state’s firefighting capacity expands.

Abubakar said successful applicants will undergo documentation, medical examinations, and physical fitness assessments before departing for training.

Also speaking, the Project Manager of Nigerbird Engineering consultants/contractors, the firm handling the exercise, Mr. Victor Fidi said the firm was engaged to recruit qualified personnel, upgrade existing fire service facilities, and establish new fire stations where necessary.

Mr. Fidi said successful candidates will undergo four to five weeks of training in firefighting, rescue operations and emergency response, beginning in the first week of August, after which they will be deployed to fire stations across the state.
