AIG Osagie Agans-Irabor Assumes Office as Zone 3 Police Commander in Yola

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Osagie John Agans-Irabor has officially assumed duty as the 30th Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 3 Police Headquarters, Yola.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Zone 3 Police Public Relations Officer, Aminu Umar Bashir.

AIG Agans-Irabor, an indigene of Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Benin. He joined the Nigeria Police Force on July 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and underwent his initial training at the Nigeria Police Academy Annex in Kaduna State.

With more than three decades of service, the new Zonal Police Commander has held several operational, investigative and administrative positions across the country.

He began his career at the Imo State Police Command, serving as Divisional Patrol and Guard Officer and Divisional Crime Officer before moving to the Police Mobile Force in 1999. During his time in the PMF, he served as Unit Commander and Second-in-Command of No. 15 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Ilorin, Kwara State, and later commanded the 39 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Oshogbo, Osun State.

Agans-Irabor also served in the Ogun, Lagos and Yobe State Police Commands, where he held various positions, including Divisional Police Officer in several divisions such as Ijebu-Igbo, Igbeba, Owode-Egba, Odeda, Langbasa in Lagos, and ‘A’ Division, Damaturu.

His career further took him to the Railway Police Command, where he served as DPO, Railway Division, Abeokuta, and later as Area Commander, Railway Area Command, Ibadan.

He subsequently held senior positions as Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Department of Finance and Administration, Bayelsa State Command, and Area Commander,

Aguata Area Command, Anambra State.Following his promotion to Deputy Commissioner of Police, he served as DCP, Department of Finance and Administration, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, before becoming DCP in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Benue State Command.Promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in 2024, Agans-Irabor served as Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID Annex, Kaduna, and later as Commissioner of Police, Anti-Human Trafficking, FCID, Lagos. He was elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police on May 18, 2026.

Throughout his career, he attended several professional and leadership courses, including the Advanced Detective Course, Tactical Leadership and Command Course, Strategic Leadership and Command Course, and Police Mobile Force Commanding Officers’ Course.

According to the statement, the new AIG brings extensive operational, investigative and administrative experience to his new assignment and is committed to strengthening security and tackling crime across Zone 3.

The statement added that Agans-Irabor maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extortion, places high priority on respect for human rights, and remains committed to community policing.
