IHRC Honours 23 Brigade for Professional Conduct, Seeks Stronger Collaboration

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), North East Nigeria, has honoured the 23 Brigade of the Nigerian Army with a Certificate of Honour in recognition of its professionalism and commitment to sustaining peace in Adamawa State.

The award was presented by the IHRC Regional Coordinator for North East Nigeria, Mr. Mustapha Tukur, to the Commander of the 23 Brigade, Brigadier General Amechi Agwu, at the Brigade Headquarters.

Speaking during the presentation, Mr. Tukur said the recognition followed an independent field assessment conducted by the Commission on the Brigade’s operations across the state.

He noted that while the IHRC and some partner organisations had previously relied largely on reports from local communities, particularly in areas affected by communal conflicts and insurgency, direct observations by the Commission’s personnel provided a broader perspective on the conduct of troops.

According to him, the findings from the field assessment informed the Commission’s decision to recognise the Brigade’s leadership for its professionalism and operational conduct.

Mr. Tukur commended the Brigade for its role in restoring normalcy to Lamurde and other communities affected by insecurity in Adamawa State.

He also called for sustained collaboration between the IHRC and the 23 Brigade to strengthen public awareness on the dangers posed by explosive ordnance in conflict-affected areas.

In his response, Brigadier General Agwu expressed appreciation to the Commission for what he described as an objective and unbiased assessment of the Brigade’s operations.

He reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to upholding the ethical standards and professionalism of the Nigerian Army, adding that troops under Sector 4 Operation HADIN KAI/23 Brigade would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to promote peace and security within their area of responsibility.
